PALO ALTO, Calif., September 12, 2023 - HP has announced it is collaborating with One Tribe, a global B-Corp certified organization focused on empowering brands across the globe to protect biodiversity via forest regeneration initiatives, to transform the print industry towards a carbon negative future.

Now more than ever, brands are looking to decarbonize their operations, yet they are challenged by Scope 3 emissions, which account for more than 90% of CO₂ emissions. To catalyze progress towards Net Positive Printing, HP's print service providers (PSPs) will be able to offset CO₂ emissions when printing, going beyond Net Zero and into carbon-negative printing for the first time ever. 

While HP Indigo already delivers a 65% to 80%¹ CO₂ emission reduction compared to analog printing, HP Industrial and One Tribe are embarking on a pilot that will connect sustainable brands with digital print suppliers from across the world, to scale and automate sustainable change in the industry.

The pilot, which has already attracted German PSPs Pf?ffle, Friedmann and Labelisten, will focus on three key pillars to transform the print industry's behavior and accelerate brands' sustainability goals. First, by creating sustainable efficiencies via short run printing, packaging waste will be reduced by 26%. Second, the pilot will accelerate brand sustainability towards regeneration through Net Positive Printing, printing on circular substrates and leveraging water-based inks. Finally, through co-creation the pilot will drive positive social impact and empower sustainable behavior change.

 
In practice, this means that once an order is processed through an HP PSP, One Tribe's API will calculate the Scope 3 emissions and will overcompensate the CO₂ required to create a Net Positive Printing solution. Every print job will be certified for its positive impact on the planet and the resulting incentives for brands such as the number of trees planted, or the number of carbon units removed from the atmosphere. The certification will help nurture end customers' loyalty to sustainable brands and encourage brands to work with PSPs who can help them achieve their sustainability goals. Both HP and One Tribe are excited to scale this pilot into a long-term collaboration, with a truly global impact.
